5. The Gorroppu Gorge
Ursulei – Orgosolo
The gorge was slowly dug out of the Rio Flumineddu water. The canyon walls reach the height of 500 meters and host animals that live only here.Once you have finished the trail it is advisable to continue along the right side of the mountain leading to the entrance of the gorge. The path between one side and the other of the gorge takes about 2 hours. You walk in the middle of large white and polished limestone rocks along the river.
HOW TO GET TO GORROPPU
To reach the gorge you have to reach the Gorropu base camp, starting point for the excursion. After a short walk you will find yourself at the Genna Sìlana from where you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the path.
You will walk along holm oak, juniper and thousand-year-old forests and you will encounter nuraghi, towers and giants’ tombs.

HOW TO REACH THE CANYON
1 – From Passo Ghenna Silana (the most beautiful!)
Reach Passo Ghenna Silana ( S.S. 125 km 183 – GPS coordinates: 40º 09′ 32.0″ – 9º 30′ 29.0″ E) and park in front of the “cantoniera ANAS”. Walk for about 4km (elevation gain 650m). It takes about 1.5/2 hours going down and about 2.5 hours going up (or possibility to reserve a jeep transfer); (difficulty level: easy hiking trail)
2 – From Ponte S’Abba arva (easy trail but long walk)
From Dorgali take the S.S. 125, direction Baunei-Urzulei. Pass the crossroad to Cala Gonone and at the 200km turn right at the first fork. Drive for 10 km following the main road untill the parking place near the bridge Ponte S’Abba Arva. Leave the car and walk along the dirt road that runs alongside the river Rio Flumineddu for about 6.5km untill reaching the entrance of the canyon. It takes about 2 hours (difficulty level: easy hiking trail)
3 – From the Supramonte of Urzulei and Orgosolo (for experts)
For the full crossing of the canyon you leave from the entrance upstream (Supramonte of Urzulei or Orgosolo). The level is difficult, so is necessary to tale an expert guide.
